From the annals of bad ideas:
- Bog-standard Rinsten spring knockoff from alphanumeric Chinese shoppe. I believe this is the only market-available seatpost suspension that will fit the Strida’s strange seatpost.
- When the spring inevitably fractures, it has a catastrophic failure mode where it attempts to stab the rider in the femoral artery on its way out - aut vincere aut mori simul and all that. I’ve sought to discourage this behaviour by wrapping the part under strain with some 8mm ID x 12mm OD braid-reinforced PVC hose.
- 6mm square u-clamp to restrict the spring’s overall travel: this reduces the spring’s inherent desire to fling its rider forward. Some foam tape and zipties to reduce shock loading.
Review: a rather low-cost experiment… I prefer the ride with it than without it, but I’m a little concerned that I’m stressing the seatpost in a way that isn’t intended. It’s too bad there isn’t a simple steel bracket to hold a 28.6mm seatpost tube.
