Hi I just got a second hand SX and the front mudguard is loose and crooked.
I obviously need to remove the front wheel to get at the screws attaching the mudguard (silly design).
How do I remove the front wheel and do I also have to take off the brake disc housing too?
Seems a bit much with a single sided fork!
Hi,
unfortunately I’m not sure to remember correctly, but I’d try to remove first only tube and tyre.
I did that just recently, but that bike didn’t have the SX (355 mm) rims, it had Brompton (349 mm) rims - on these it worked fine.
Removing tube and tyre is extraordinary easy, compared to a standard, two sided, fork.
If it doesn not work and you still can’t reach the lower mudguard bolt, then there are just three more screws to remove:
The wheel bolt and the two caliper bolts.
For the two caliper bolts I have a hint - separate upper and lower bolt plus the according washers and remount them on the same position as before.
To orientate the caliper in its correct position follow this process:
- Install the wheel.
- Mount caliper and its screws, but do not tighten them fully.
- Pull the brake lever.
- Tighten the caliper bolts.
Hi, if you do need to remove the wheel then it is possible to remove it by only loosening the the brake caliper and not completely removing it. I do this by, removing the brake cable from the caliper, loosening the one bolt then removing the other and sliding the caliper off the disk and out of the way to remove the wheel.
By doing this you can keep track of where the washers go on the bolts.
But if you do remove the the caliper and are not sure of where the washers go when reassembling, the washers on the front caliper are not usually positioned the same as the rear caliper. The front washers are on the bolt side, the rear washers are on the caliper side of the frame lug.

Thanks Bill I was able to do it quite easily following your instructions
